Handyman services in Scottsdale AZ
Better prices, faster availability, & professional quality
As background, the term "handyman" usually is used to refer to a skilled laborer who is not operating as a licensed contractor. Some of them are very competent, while others have very little training or expertise. Occasionally, people offering handyman services are even currently licensed as a contractor, but still include the term "handyman" in their marketing (as in their business cards and websites). Why? To let people know that they are open to residential projects of any size, including small home improvements or even landscaping services. (Further, simply being licensed does not mean that someone is actually experienced in any particular type of work, right?)
About myself and my handyman in Scottsdale
Briefly, I am the person created this website (and others like it). For most pages of this site, I match you with one or more service providers that are specialized in whatever type of work that you need. This page is a bit different though.
Through this page, I will connect you with "my handyman" (whom I personally have known for over a decade). He's who you see in the picture to the right (and in the slideshow on the left). (Note that if he is not available within your desired timeframe, I can still connect you with other service providers if you wish.)
Next, because I have a lot of experience with many builders (in several states), I am aware that occasionally there can be unexpected stresses with the contractor (and not just in states that have no licensing requirements for general contractors). Those stresses range from minor misunderstandings and delays to... much, much, much worse.
Oddly enough, because homeowners tend to presume that EVERY licensed contractor is more competent (and more reliable) than anyone without a license, then they may be less selective when choosing a licensed contractor than when choosing a handyman. However, many contractors just are not very "professional." Others seem to be much better at getting hired than at completing the work as promised. Wouldn't it be great to find a handyman who is not only more affordable than the average contractor but also more professional?
I was delighted to learn that Mike was finally offering handyman services in this part of Arizona!
So, my handyman's name is Mike Madsen. I knew him socially for years before I learned that he has worked as a handyman for decades (and at that time both of us lived in other parts of Arizona).
Until recently, he lived in Sedona (but then he got married and moved toward Phoenix). So, most of his testimonials and references for his handyman work are in colder parts of Arizona.
For years, I had been repeatedly asking Mike to offer handyman services in North Phoenix and nearby areas of Arizona. Why? Besides my personal confidence in him, I realized what a huge need there was for what he could offer.
While I know some great contractors that serve Scottsdale homeowners (at least if they have big budgets and are willing to wait several months for their selected contractor to be available), that does not apply to every homeowner. I get lots of requests from people who just bought a home (or are about to) and have major urgency. They often need a fast response, a fast price quote, plus a fast completion of their home improvements (or of tenant improvements to a new location for their business). Some are disabled and need certain disability accommodations to be completed prior to when they even move in.
Oddly enough, I have personally worked with Mike on two occasions to install water lines that ran just under the ceiling of a big commercial space. In fact, that reminds me of one of the typical contrasts between a handyman and the average contractor: a handyman is typically much less resistant to the home owner doing some of the work. That brings us to this topic....
General benefits of using any handyman
#1 is lower cost. Everyone knows that, right?
#2 is fast availability. A handyman is typically free to meet you and then to start your project much faster than the average contractor. (Because a handyman typically only works on smaller projects, they do not ever get a backlog in which they won't be available for the next 5 months because of 1 or 2 bigger projects).
#3 No project is too small (depending on your budget and schedule).
#4 Usually, you can do some of the work your self (if desired).
Specific benefits of using Mike's handyman services in Scottsdale
#1 I like him and I expect that you will, too.
When you are inviting someone on to your property or inside of your home, you want to be comfortable with them as a person in general plus with the way that they conduct themselves in their workplace (like in terms of being considerate by keeping things clean, plus being cautious about safety concerns for you, your pets, your grandkids, or even your elderly in-laws who are visiting, and so on).
#2 With his wide skillset, he'll reduce your stress and save you time.
My handyman is experienced in MANY different kinds of specialized tasks. He has decades of expertise in a wide variety of construction and remodeling services. So, that means that you won't need to screen and hire lots of different people to handle different parts of the work. Unless you need certain kinds of electrical or other specialized work done, he is competent to handle it all.
He can even advise you on great sources for buying construction materials, then help you select what to purchase. You can obtain them or arrange for him to handle the pick-up and delivery of all materials (in his heavy-duty hauling truck).
#3 If relevant, you can obtain a building permit as the "owner-builder" (and we can even help you get professional drawings done if that is needed in your permit application). Whatever parts of the process that Mike can handle for you, he will let you know.
Legal considerations when using a handyman in Arizona
Briefly, Mike is not a licensed contractor, so that means that there is no transfer of liability from you to him when you hire him. Until you trust him to be competent, honest, and professional in everything that he does for you, do not hire him! If you want someone else's insurance to cover your project, then you will need to pay extra to cover the costs of their builder's insurance.
Fortunately, most homeowners already have insurance policies that cover many kinds of property damage (or even personal injuries that can happen on their property). So, Mike's activities at your home may already be covered by your own property insurance (similar to when a licensed contractor remodels their own home, or if you hired a housekeeper, a babysitter, or some other unlicensed service provider or domestic employee).
Also, if you hire him and then the State of Arizona determines that you did so in the conducting of a business (as in for later renting out your property to tenants or making home improvements in order to flip or resell your property within 12 months), then YOU actually could be subject to legal penalties. (However, this would not apply if the services are minimal, as in less than $1000 in total value.)
For owner-occupants (meaning that no one else outside of your household will be residing permanently at the property), you can legally hire the remodeling services of anyone (as long as they are authorized to work in the US). Generally, there is actually no dollar limit to the amount of work that they can legally do for you at your own residence (just like there is no dollar value limitation on the amount of work that you can legally do yourself even though you are not a licensed general contractor).
What about hiring a handyman in Scottsdale to complete work at a commercial building or business?
I am aware of Mike being repeatedly hired by a nationwide grocery store chain with locations in Scottsdale to do improvements to their facility. However, I do not know all the current laws. For more info, see the link above or this one: Licensure regulations for the AZ Registrar of Contractors.
